After a year away from European competition, Chelsea is on the brink of re-entering the newly-expanded 2024-25 Conference League, thanks to a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their playoff tie. Goals from Christopher Nkunku, who converted a penalty, and Noni Madueke, who scored a fine goal as a substitute, have given Chelsea a solid advantage.
Chelsea's new manager Enzo Maresca, now officially a Premier League manager, praised his team’s second-half attacking display and emphasized his commitment to developing a competitive side. Chelsea's recent form includes three consecutive away victories, and they need just a draw against Servette to advance to the Conference League group stages.
Servette managed to hold their own during the first leg at Stamford Bridge, registering more shots and corners than Chelsea, but failed to convert their chances. Their coach, Thomas Haberli, expressed regret over missed opportunities and acknowledged the challenge of overturning a two-goal deficit against a team of Chelsea’s stature. Nonetheless, he remains hopeful for a dramatic turnaround in the second leg.
The Maroons, who finished third in the Swiss Super League and won the Swiss Cup last season, have not played domestically recently, giving them a full week to prepare for the crucial match. However, their recent form has been inconsistent, with only one win in their last six matches and recent home defeats, including a heavy loss to Basel and a second-leg defeat to Braga in the Europa League qualifiers.
