Matt Turner, the United States No. 1 international goalkeeper, has joined Crystal Place on loan from Nottingham Forest, both clubs announced Friday. He is expected to challenge Dean Henderson for the No. 1 spot at the club.
Turned moved to England when linking up with Arsenal in 2022. He was restricted to just seven cup appearances for the Gunners, with none of those outings coming in the English top-flight. He then joined Forest in 2023, looking for an expanded role. After struggling with inconsistency through last season, he ultimately lost his starting role. Entering this season, he was seen as the No. 3 keeper at the club.
Nottingham Forest pulled him away from north London in the summer of 2023, but saw him slip down their pecking order on the back of a number of costly errors. Various landing spots for Turner have been mooted in the latest transfer window – from MLS to Liverpool.
With his national team position at stake, it was crucial Turner found another club that would allow him to get some playing time. While he isn't expected to start league games, he could play a role in Palace's cup competitions and give manager Oliver Glasner a compelling alternative if he proves himself.
Turner's arrival will see him fill the void created by Sam Johnstone’s departure for Wolves.
Turner has a decorated career in MLS and on the U.S. men's national team. He won Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021 as a member of the Revolution and two Nations Leagues in 2023 and 2024 -- securing Golden Gloves in both tournaments.
Turner took in 17 Premier League appearances for Forest, but the last of those came on Jan. 30. The experienced shot-stopper is eager to find regular game time away from the City Ground, with minutes required in order to retain his standing as No.1 for his country.
