The transfer deal is reported to be worth around €30.5 million (£25.4m/$33.6m), with a significant 10 per cent sell-on clause included in the agreement. For Manchester United, this deal represents a crucial financial gain. As McTominay is a product of the club’s academy, his sale is considered "pure profit," a factor that is particularly important for the club’s compliance with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations.
United already have a replacement for McTominay lined up in the form of Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte. Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, played a pivotal role in thrashing out the deal as he held extensive negotiations in Manchester to iron out the final details. They outbid Premier League outfit Fulham who were ready to fork out £20m for the player.
The 2023-24 season was McTominay’s most prolific in terms of goal-scoring. He found the back of the net 10 times in 43 appearances, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively from midfield. Hence, it was no surprise that Erik ten Hag did not want to part ways with the midfielder who is also known for his intensive work rate.
"I'm very happy for him and for us, but it's mixed [feelings] because I would have preferred not to lose him," the Dutchman said at a press conference on Friday. "He has Manchester United in his veins."
Ten Hag later added: "He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it's the rules. You have to discuss the rules to do sales and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value. It's not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it's a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us."
McTominay’s move to Napoli signifies a new chapter in his career, one that promises fresh challenges and opportunities under the leadership of Antonio Conte. He will be eager to hit the ground running and make his debut against Parma on Sunday if he is registered in time with Serie A.
