Luis Suarez announced his retirement from the Uruguay national team Monday, wrapping up an illustrious international career that has seen 142 caps and 69 goals - the most in La Celeste history.

The striker, who also stars for Inter Miami in MLS, will play his final match in Uruguay's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay Friday at Estadio Centenario, the team's primary home stadium.

Suarez is among the best players Uruguay has produced, and has delivered in countless moments for the South American team.

Suarez made his national team debut on Feb. 8, 2007, a 3-1 win over rivals Colombia. He rose to prominence during the 2010 World Cup as he started the majority of Uruguay's matches.

Similar to his legendary club career, Suarez has been no stranger to controversy. The forward had an infamous handball to block a goal that would earn Ghana a penalty. Asamoah Gyan missed the spot kick and Uruguay would advance after a shootout.

Arguably his best year as a national team player might been 2011, a season in which he led the team to Copa America glory and was named Player of the Tournament after scoring four goals.

“I’ve been thinking about this and analyzing this. I believe this is the right time,” Suarez said on Monday, according to the Athletic. “I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. That 19-year old kid is now a veteran player, an older player - however you want to call it - with an incredible history with the national team will give his life for the team on Friday.”

Suarez is in rarified air as he is one of 38 players to play in four or more World Cups. He played in the 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 World Cups, joining a notable list of footballers, including Miami teamate Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pele and Miroslav Klose.

All eyes will be on the Estadio Centenario in what should be a highly emotional farewell to one of international football's greats.

Following his retirement, Suarez will continued to be counted on by Inter Miami in MLS, where he has 16 goals and five assists in 20 matches played.
