Preview: Slovenia vs Austria

Soccer News 2024/09/05 06:48

Slovenia's Euro 2024 campaign will undoubtedly go down as a great success, as they reached the knockout stages of the tournament in only their second appearance at a European Championship finals.

The national team will now turn their attention to the Nations League, where they will once again compete in League B of the competition, but this time in Group 3 alongside Austria, Kazakhstan and Norway.

In 2022-23, Slovenia finished third in Group 4, taking six points from their six matches, having been promoted to League B by virtue of finishing top of Group 3 of League C in 2020-21.

Matjaz Kek's side will take on Austria and Norway during this international break before facing both Norway and Kazakhstan in October, and it will be interesting to see how this section develops.

Slovenia have only met Austria on four previous occasions and have only one win to their name, a 2-0 victory in their first meeting in a friendly in March 1997.

As mentioned above, Austria also reached the last 16 of Euro 2024 and were tipped as potential outsiders to lift the trophy after a strong performance in the group stage of the competition.

However, Ralf Rangnick's side fell just short, losing 2-1 to Turkey in the first knockout round, and their attention now turns to the Nations League, where they face Slovenia and Norway during the international break.

Austria were relegated from League A in 2022-23 after finishing bottom of Group 1, taking just four points from their six matches against Croatia, Denmark and France.

They are on a three-match winning streak against Slovenia, including a 1-0 success when the two sides last met in a Euro 2020 qualifier in October 2019.

However, Austria have lost each of their last three Nations League matches and have not won in the competition since a 3-0 win over Croatia in June 2022.

Slovenia possible starting lineup:

Austria possible starting lineup:

Pentz; Posch, Danso, Lienhart, Mwene; Seiwald, Laimer; Schmid, Baumgartner, Sabitzer; Arnautovic

Prediction:Slovenia 1-1 Austria
