Preview: Guatemala vs Martinique

Soccer News 2024/09/05 08:24

Guatemala will be hoping that their debut campaign in League A will serve them well in their second outing, having won just one of their four matches at this stage a year ago.

Luis Fernando Tena's side made a promising start to last year's competition, taking four points from their first two games, but they were too complacent against Trinidad and Tobago, squandering a 2-0 lead after 31 minutes to lose 3-2.

La Bicolor have never lost in seven previous Nations League encounters at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores, conceding just once in a 1-1 draw with Panama last season.

Since winning their first two matches in CONCACAF qualifying for the 2026 finals, Guatemala have gone three games without a win in all competitions, and were held to a 1-1 draw by Uruguay A in a friendly last weekend.

Only once in 2024 have they been beaten after drawing first blood, when an own goal from Lautaro Martinez gave them a shock early lead, before the Inter Milan striker and Lionel Messi each scored a brace in a 4-1 friendly win for the world champions.

Guatemala are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Caribbean opponents in all competitions, without conceding a goal.

After narrowly missing out on a place in the last eight of the competition a year ago, Martinique enter the new Nations League campaign with plenty of optimism.

Their recent run of form has seen them go unbeaten in four consecutive matches in all competitions, most recently holding Suriname to a 1-1 draw in a non-sanctioned friendly in March.

Including that game, Marc Collat's side have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches, but have not scored more than once in 90 minutes since a 6-4 defeat to Costa Rica in the group stage of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

If Les Matinino are to progress beyond the group stages of this tournament, they will need to improve on their away form, which has seen them fail to score a single goal in four Ligue A outings.

In two Ligue A campaigns, they have only lost once when they scored first, a 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica in March 2023, while they won twice last season when they opened their account 1-0.

Martinique have been outscored 10-0 in four League A encounters with Central American opponents, with their only point against the region coming in a 0-0 draw at El Salvador in October 2023.

Guatemala possible starting lineup:

Martinique possible starting lineup:

Clementia; Dussaut, Poulolo, Rivierez, Burner; Mandouki, Appin; Grelet, Cavelan, Marajo; Labeau
