Preview: Algeria vs Equatorial Guinea
Soccer News 2024/09/05 11:40
After suffering a 2-1 defeat to Guinea in Vladimir Petkovic's first match in charge, Algeria bounced back with a 2-1 win over Uganda as goals from Houssem Aouar and Said Benrahma secured victory for the Fennec Foxes in their 2026 World Cup qualifier.
The North Africans will now be looking to qualify for a seventh consecutive AFCON in their quest for a third title, having won their second in 2019.
Algeria's most recent AFCON campaign was a disappointment, as they failed to progress beyond the group stage for the second year running, taking just two points from a group that also included Angola, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
Petkovic will be hoping for a repeat of the team's success in the last two AFCON qualifying campaigns, when they went unbeaten.
Equatorial Guinea's recent international results have also been mixed, with a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia followed by a 1-0 home win over Malawi.
The victory over Malawi was a hard-fought one, with an 82nd-minute goal from Iban Salvador separating the two sides in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Nzalang Nacional, who were knocked out in the round of 16 at the 2023 AFCON, are aiming to qualify for a third successive tournament and a fifth overall.
A positive start to the qualifying campaign is crucial for Juan Micha's men, but they will have to overcome a five-match winless streak away from home that has seen them lose three and draw two.
