Soccer News 2024/09/09 02:00
Angola began their quest for a place at next year's Morocco finals on a high when they defeated four-time African champions Ghana 1-0 in their Group F opener on Thursday.
Red Star Belgrade striker Milson stole the headlines at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium when he netted a 93rd-minute winner to give Angola a last-gasp victory and end the Black Stars' 24-year unbeaten run in Kumasi.
It followed a dazzling run to the 2024 COSAFA Cup in July, when Pedro Goncalves' side overcame Seychelles, Lesotho and Comoros to reach the final, where they thrashed Namibia 5-0 to claim a record fourth title in the Southern African tournament.
Angola have now won their last five games in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and keeping two clean sheets, and are unbeaten in nine matches since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Morocco on 22 March.
The Black Sable Antelopes will be hoping to maintain this fine run of form on Monday when they take on a team they are unbeaten against in their last four meetings, with one win and three draws dating back to 1988.
Sudan, on the other hand, produced an impressive display of teamwork in their Group F opener last Wednesday, recording a 1-0 victory over Niger when the two nations met at the Juba Stadium.
Nongbua Pitchaya midfielder Abo Eisa broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half, finishing off a well-worked set-piece to give the Falcons of Jediane the lead they would never relinquish.
Sudan have now won each of their last four competitive matches, including three successive victories over Congo DR, Mauritania and South Sudan in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
James Kwesi Appiah's men, ranked 121st in the latest FIFA World Ranking, are currently one point clear at the top of Group B, having won three and drawn one of their opening four matches.
Having missed out on the 2023 AFCON in Côte d'Ivoire, Sudan are in search of a second successive win in their opening two qualifiers as they look to return to the continental showpiece for the first time since their group-stage exit in 2021.
