Benin were outclassed and outplayed by West African rivals Nigeria in their Group D opener as they went down 3-0 to the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday.

Atalanta BC striker Ademola Lookman put in a top-class performance, scoring either side of Victor Osimhen's opener to give Nigeria a comfortable win on the opening day.

Prior to that, Gernot Rohr's side had gone unbeaten in three consecutive competitive matches, drawing one and beating both Rwanda and Nigeria in consecutive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Benin have made an impressive start to the World Cup qualifying campaign, taking seven points from their four matches to sit third in Group C, only behind leaders Rwanda on goal difference.

Les Guepards have not featured at the Africa Cup of Nations since reaching the quarter-finals at Egypt 2019, and will go into Tuesday's game looking to keep their quest for a place in Morocco on track.

Libya, on the other hand, were denied a dream start to their AFCON qualifying campaign as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Rwanda at the 11 June Stadium in Tripoli last Wednesday.

Al Ittihad SC defender Sobhi Al Mabrouk scored his international debut in the 16th minute to give the hosts the lead, but 26-year-old striker Innocent Nshuti netted two minutes from time to give Rwanda a share of the spoils.

The defeat followed a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in a World Cup qualifier on 11 June that ended the Mediterranean Knights' nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Despite the loss to Cape Verde, Libya remain on course for their first-ever World Cup appearance as they sit second in Group D, level on seven points with Cape Verde and one behind leaders Cameroon.

Head coach Milutin Sredojevic will be hoping his side can take the positives from Wednesday's stalemate and hit the ground running as they look to end a 12-year AFCON absence.

Libya's last appearance at the continental showpiece was in 2012, when they crashed out in the group stage after winning one and drawing one of their three matches to take four points and finish third in Group A.
