Preview: Burkina Faso vs Malawi,Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Soccer News 2024/09/09 06:16

Burkina Faso go into Sunday's game off the back of a 1-1 draw away to Senegal in their opening AFCON qualifier.

Ousseni Bouda shocked the Senegalese with a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Sadio Mane's early opener and give Burkina Faso a strong start to their qualification hopes.

While it was a great result for the Stallions, they are now winless in their last eight games in all competitions, a drought that stretches back to January.

It is a surprising run considering their squad includes some notable players plying their trade in Europe, with the defensive duo of Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba and Benfica's Issa Kabore complementing a forward line that includes Bournemouth's Dango Ouattara and Ajax's Bertrand Traore.

Burkina Faso are third in the standings, five points behind leaders Egypt, but crucially only one point behind Guinea-Bissau in second.

Malawi, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to Burundi on Thursday.

In a game dominated by Malawi, goals from Chawanangwa Kaonga and Lanjesi Nkhoma were not enough to earn them their first points as a Chimwemwe Idana own goal and strikes from Jean Claude Girumugisha and Mokono Eldhino condemned Patrick Mabedi's side to an opening defeat.

The result means that Malawi have now won just one of their last six games in all competitions, a 3-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in June.

The poor run of form has also left Malawi fourth in their World Cup qualifying group after four games, and Mabedi will have his work cut out if he is to lead his side ahead of Tunisia, Namibia and Liberia in their quest to book a place at the 2026 showpiece.

Mabedi took over as head coach in 2023 after spending the previous three years as head coach of Malawi's U-20 side, having previously worked as an assistant coach for various club teams in South Africa.

Burkina Faso possible starting lineup:

Koffi; Kabore, Djiga, Tapsoba, Yago; Boni, Banse, Badolo; Ouattara, Bande, Traore

Malawi possible starting lineup:

Chikooka; Sanudi, Mwase, Chembezi, Chirwa; Chester, Idana, Aaron, Nkhoma; Kaonga, Mphasi

Prediction:Burkina Faso 2-1 Malawi
