Cape Verde's bid for a fifth AFCON got off to a poor start when they were thrashed 3-0 at the Cairo International Stadium last Friday.

The Blue Sharks had kept five clean sheets in their last six games in all competitions before the clash with the Pharaohs, but their defence collapsed like a pack of cards as they allowed eight shots on target, three of which found the back of the net.

Bubista's men will be looking to make history by sealing a third successive AFCON appearance for the West African island nation, but they will need to bounce back against Mauritania or that prospect could start to slip away.

All three previous meetings between the two sides have taken place at neutral venues and during championships, with the most recent encounter ending in a 1-0 win for Cape Verde at the 2023 AFCON earlier this year.

The Blue Sharks are unbeaten in their last four matches on home soil, winning three and drawing one, and anything less than victory on Tuesday could make qualification more difficult.

Mauritania finally ended a five-match winless streak when Sidi Bouna Amar came off the bench to score an 84th-minute stunner as they beat Botswana 1-0 in their opening AFCON qualifier.

The Lions of the Chinguetti have endured a poor run of form in 2024 and the win will come as a relief to coach Amir Abdou, who had seen his side lose six and draw two of their previous nine matches before last Saturday.

It was also the end of a five-match scoreless streak for Mauritania, who go into Tuesday's clash with a chance of scoring and winning in consecutive games for the first time since September-October 2023.

However, the last time the visitors won away from home was against Central African Republic in June 2023 - since then they have lost to Congo DR and drawn away to South Sudan.
