Soccer News 2024/09/11 07:19

A place in the Copa do Brasil semi-finals is within reach for Atletico Mineiro, who won their first away game of the 2024 tournament last time out.

If they can avoid defeat on Thursday, it will be their first appearance in the last four of the competition since 2021, when they lifted the trophy.

Gabriel Milito's men have won consecutive games in all competitions by a single goal and are unbeaten in their last four away from home.

The Belo Horizonte outfit have not lost a Copa do Brasil match at home in normal time since Figueirense beat them 2-1 in the third round of the 2018 edition, although Mineiro eventually progressed from that tie on penalties (5-4).

Up to this stage of the 2024 Brasileiro Serie A campaign, Mineiro have failed to win three home games in which they have conceded the opening goal, dropping six points in the process.

Galo are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Sao Paulo in all competitions, winning six of them.

The defending champions collapsed at the worst possible moment in the first leg, losing 3-1 to Flamengo at home for the first time in the competition since the 2022 semi-finals.

Sao Paulo also trailed in the first leg of a Copa do Brasil tie last year, losing 2-1 to Corinthians, but bounced back with a 2-0 win in the return leg to reach the final and win it all.

Luis Zubeldia's men are winless away from home in their last five Brasileiro Serie A games, losing four of them.

O Clube de Fe are unbeaten in their last five Copa do Brasil second legs, their last defeat coming against Sport Recife in the last 16 a year ago (3-1), although Sao Paulo went through on penalties (5-3).

They have not been eliminated at this stage of the Copa do Brasil since Fortaleza knocked them out 5-3 on aggregate in 2021.

The Tricolor Paulista have never beaten Atletico Mineiro since the Arena MRV became Galo's new home, with Sao Paulo's last away win against them coming at the Estadio Raimundo Sampaio in the 2016 domestic season (2-1).

Atletico Mineiro possible starting lineup:

Everson; Saravia, Battaglia, Lyanco; Scarpa, Otavio, Franco, Arana; Bernard, Cadu, Paulinho

Sao Paulo possible starting lineup:

Rafael; Rafinha, Arboleda, Sabino, Welington; Bobadilla, Gustavo; Nestor, Luciano, Moura; Calleri

Prediction:Atletico Mineiro 1-0 Sao Paulo (Atletico Mineiro advance 2-0 on aggregate)
