'It's amazing' - Mason Greenwood wins Marseille's August Player of the Month award

Greenwood has started every game since joining Marseille in the summer. In Ligue 1, the 22-year-old has scored five goals and laid on one assist in three games, with two braces, against Stade Brestois and Toulouse. Now, he has won Marseille's Player of the Month prize.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe and despite a stellar season, Manchester United had no intention of allowing him back into the fold; he was suspended by the club after he was arrested by police on charges including attempted rape and domestic violence. He was since cleared of all charges, but has now expressed his joy at being allowed to continue his career.

On scoring his first Marseille goal at home, in a 2-2 draw against Reims, Greenwood said: “It’s amazing. I’ve never really experienced a crowd like that before and I’ve played in a lot of stadiums in Europe and obviously this has been the loudest one. Obviously to play for Marseille and to score my first goal there, it meant a lot to me. Hopefully there can be many more in the season.”

On being voted player of the month, he added: “I want to say thank you very much and hopefully we can have many more moments in the season.”

Marseille play Nice this weekend before a meeting with Lyon. They are currently second in Ligue 1, having won two and drawn one of their games; PSG have won all three and sit top.
