Soccer News 2024/09/20 11:40
With the club's new owners having their first transfer window at the helm, there was always optimism that West Brom could make a strong start to the 2024-25 season.
However, there has only been one fresh face in the Championship starting line-up this season, with Carlos Corberan able to select the same XI for five consecutive matches.
Familiarity seems to have paid dividends, with West Brom taking 13 points from their opening five games, dropping points only in a goalless draw at home to Leeds United.
Keeping Josh Maja fit could be key, with the striker already registering five goals and an assist from his appearances in attack.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring in the first minute at Portsmouth last time out, before Alex Mowatt scored a brace at the interval in an impressive 3-0 win at Fratton Park.
West Brom have the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just twice, in stark contrast to Plymouth, who have conceded nine times in the same period.
The Pilgrims were winless in the Championship under Rooney until they produced one of the shock results of the season so far, ending Sunderland's 100% record with a 3-2 victory.
While an own goal and a penalty contributed to two of their three goals, it was a stirring second-half comeback at Home Park that deserves credit.
Plymouth had previously gone six halves without finding the back of the net, and it will be interesting to see if Rooney takes the handbrake off after last weekend's success.
