Preview: Luton Town vs Sheffield Wednesday,English football Championship, Gameweek 6

Soccer News 2024/09/20 11:48

Luton Town return to action on Saturday looking to make it two wins in a row in the Championship after a slow start to their return to the second tier last time out.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last time out, the Hatters set out to make an immediate return to the top flight under Rob Edwards, but managed just one point from their first four attempts, a stalemate at Portsmouth following a 4-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Burnley on the opening day of the season.

Things did not improve before the international break in September, with Edwards' side suffering narrow defeats at the hands of Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers, the latter of which was knocked out of the EFL Cup, before travelling to Millwall last weekend in search of a first league win.

They did so for the fifth time, leaving The Den with all three points after holding on to a 1-0 lead throughout after Teden Mengi's 10th-minute opener.

Having eased the pressure with their return to winning ways, Luton Town will now look to get their Championship campaign back on track with a second successive three-point haul at Kenilworth Road on Saturday.

The visitors, meanwhile, travel south in search of their first win in five league games after a difficult start to the season.

Sheffield Wednesday, who are looking to build on last year's heroic survival in their second successive Championship campaign and first full season under Danny Rohl, got off to a flying start with a 4-0 thrashing of Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough, but have since picked up just one point in four attempts.

Defeats to Sunderland, Leeds United and Millwall followed before the international break, with the South Yorkshire outfit conceding nine goals and failing to score before returning to action at home to Queens Park Rangers last Saturday.

That contest looked set to end goalless, but Barry Bannan finally opened the scoring for the Owls in the 93rd minute, only for the visitors to claim a share of the spoils when Alfie Lloyd converted from a goalmouth scramble.

Since then, Sheffield Wednesday have returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win away at third-tier Blackpool to progress to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, and will be looking to put last week's disappointment behind them by picking up three points at Kenilworth Road.
