Soccer News 2024/09/24 03:58

After a four-match winless run to start the 2024-25 League One season, Leyton Orient have been on a roll since the September international break, with Tuesday's hosts recording back-to-back victories to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

Even more impressively, both of the O's recent victories have come away from the Gaughan Group Stadium, with Richie Wellens' men taking maximum points from games at Reading and early pacesetters Stockport County on Saturday, when the Hatters suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

Ethan Galbraith's brilliant brace in the opening 20 minutes at Edgeley Park took his League One tally for the season to three, and the 23-year-old Northern Ireland international is on course to equal his five-goal haul from last season.

Leyton Orient's six points from two away games in the third tier have lifted them to 20th in the early League One standings, ahead of Rotherham United - who were widely tipped for promotion - in 21st on goal difference.

The O's are still waiting for their first win at the Gaughan Group Stadium in League One this season, although Wellens' side have had a tough time of it at their London base, facing Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City in their opening two games at the venue.

Having missed out on promotion to the Championship in each of the last two seasons due to heartbreak in the play-off semi-finals, Peterborough United are on a mission to challenge the likes of Birmingham, Huddersfield and Wrexham for a top-two finish and automatic promotion.

However, the Posh endured a troubled start to their 2024-25 campaign - a 2-0 home defeat to Michael Duff's Terriers - but Tuesday's visitors have since won three of their last five games in the third tier, including a five-goal thriller against Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Peterborough looked on course for victory when goals from Kwame Poku, Ricky-Jade Jones and Malik Mothersille gave Darren Ferguson's side a three-goal lead after 63 minutes, but two late Pirates strikes ensured a nervy finish at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Posh's three points against Bristol Rovers at the weekend lifted them up to 10th in the table, just one point behind sixth-placed Lincoln City, and Peterborough have the chance to move as high as third with a win at Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

Ferguson's side still boast a wealth of League One talent, despite a number of key first-team departures during the summer transfer window, including winger Ephron Mason-Clark and full-back Harrison Burrows, who joined Coventry City and Sheffield United respectively.

Leyton Orient possible starting lineup:

Hemming; James, Beckles, Happe, Currie; Brown, Clare; O'Neill, Galbraith, Agyei; Kelman

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:

Steer; Ajiboye, Katongo, Fernandez, Wallin, Sparkes; Kyprianou, Poku, Collins; Jones, Mothersille
