Preview: Atletico Mineiro vs Fluminense,Copa Libertadores,Quarter-Finals,2nd Leg
Soccer News 2024/09/24 07:03
For more than 80 minutes last Wednesday, Atletico Mineiro put in another solid defensive performance, keeping Flu at bay and limiting their chances of scoring.
In the end, however, it was not to be as they fell just short of a fourth consecutive clean sheet in the competition.
Although the first leg did not go their way, Gabriel Milito's men have plenty to be optimistic about going into this encounter, having won all their home games in this year's competition, finding the back of the net in three of those four games.
Galo haven't advanced from a Copa Libertadores tie after losing the first leg since 2013, when they bounced back from a 2-0 defeat to Olimpia to win the second leg of the final by the same scoreline and win on penalties to lift the trophy for the first and only time in the club's history.
Seven of the eight goals they have conceded in the Libertadores this year have come in the second half, and four of their six victories in the competition have come when they were ahead after 45 minutes.
Atletico Mineiro have only lost one knockout match at home to a Brasileiro Serie A side in the competition, a 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras in the last 16 a year ago.
As has been the case throughout this year's Libertadores, Fluminense produced another impressive second half in the first leg of this tie to set themselves up for a second successive semi-final appearance.
Some fine work out wide by Keno and a pinpoint cross for Lima to head home his second goal of the competition were all they needed to go into the tie with an advantage.
Their work is far from over, however, as Flu have failed to win three of their four away games in this competition, the last of which came in the last 16 at Gremio (2-1).
Mano Menezes has yet to see his side find the back of the net in the first half of a Libertadores game.
Fluzao have managed a result in two of their away games in the competition, although they squandered a 1-0 lead at Gremio and lost in the previous round.
They are unbeaten in four of their last five meetings with Atletico Mineiro, winning 2-0 on their last visit to Belo Horizonte in the Brasileiro Serie A last month.
Matias Zaracho will be out until the end of the season with a hernia problem, Alisson Santana has a thigh problem and Otavio has a shoulder injury.
Eduardo Vargas is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a calf strain, while Renzo Saravia has been ruled out with a thigh strain.
Ignacio is unlikely to feature for Fluminense on Wednesday due to a meniscus problem, while Thiago Silva was forced off at half-time last week with an ankle injury and could be a game-time decision.
Nonato is not expected to return until early October with a broken nose, while Thiago Santos is available despite being suspended for the last league game due to yellow card accumulation.
Atletico Mineiro possible starting lineup:

Fluminense possible starting lineup:
