Preview: Penarol vs Flamengo,Copa Libertadores,Quarter-Finals,2nd Leg

Soccer News 2024/09/24 07:28

Penarol took a giant step towards reaching the semi-finals of this year's Libertadores when they stunned the home crowd with a second away win of the year after just 13 minutes.

If they can avoid defeat on Thursday, the Manyas will be playing in the Libertadores semi-finals for the first time since 2011, when they lost 2-1 to Santos in the final.

Daniel Aguirre's men have won all four of their home games in the competition, including a 4-0 thrashing of The Strongest in the last 16.

Penarol go into this game on a four-match winning streak in all competitions, having outscored their four opponents by a combined margin of 12-1.

Only once in the 21st century have Penarol failed to progress from a Libertadores knockout tie when leading after the first leg, losing 2-1 to Brazilians Sao Caetano in the second leg of a 1-0 win in 2002 to reach the quarter-finals on penalties.

That year was also the last time they won a home knockout match against a Brazilian side this century, the only previous occasion coming in the 2000 Round of 16 when they beat Palmeiras 1-0 in the first leg but lost on penalties.

A third Libertadores semi-final appearance in the last four seasons is in jeopardy for Flamengo, who suffered their first home defeat of the tournament last week.

It ended an eight-match unbeaten run at home in all competitions for Tite's men, as the Mengao find themselves trailing after the first leg of a Libertadores knockout tie for the first time since the 2019 round of 16.

On that occasion, Flamengo bounced back from an opening defeat to Emelec to progress on penalties and eventually lift the trophy for the second time.

Despite losing just one quarter-final this century (4-3 on aggregate to Universidad de Chile in 2010), the Brazilians have not won a knockout match at the tournament outside the Maracana since beating Athletico Paranaense 1-0 in the 2022 final in Ecuador.

Since reaching the semi-finals of the Copa do Brasil earlier this month, they have failed to win their last three games in all competitions.

Their only Copa Libertadores victory on Uruguayan soil came in 1991, when they beat Club Nacional 1-0 in Montevideo in the group stage.

From the second leg defeat to The Strongest to the opening win over Flamengo, Penarol made just one change to their starting eleven, with Jaime Baez replacing Leo Coelho.

Javier Cabrera scored the only goal in the first leg last Thursday as Washington Aguerre made six saves to keep a clean sheet.

Flamengo were without Matias Vina and Luiz Araujo through knee injuries, while Michael and Gabriel Barbosa are still out with thigh problems.

Everton's Achilles injury means he will not return to the Mengao this season, nor will Pedro, who is recovering from an ACL problem.

Penarol possible starting lineup:

Aguerre; Milans, Mendez, Rodriguez, Olivera; Garcia, Darias; Cabrera, L. Fernandez, Ramirez; Silvera

Flamengo possible starting lineup:

Rossi; Franca, Bruno, Pereira, Lucas; Pulgar, de la Cruz; Gerson, de Arrascaeta, Carlinhos; Henrique

Prediction:Penarol 0-0 Flamengo (Penarol advances 1-0 on aggregate)
