Preview: Independiente Medellin vs Lanus,Copa Sudamericana,Quarter-Finals,2nd Leg

Soccer News 2024/09/24 08:09

Another strong defensive display in the opening game of this tie has put Independiente Medellin in a position to reach the semi-finals of an international club competition for the first time since the 2003 Copa Libertadores.

Alejandro Restrepo's men are the last Colombian side left in the competition, and a win on Wednesday would make them the first Colombian side to reach the penultimate stage of the competition since Junior and Santa Fe in 2018.

El Decano have a 100% record at home in this year's Copa Sudamericana, outscoring their opponents in Medellin by a combined score of 14-3.

They have conceded just one goal in their last five matches at the Estadio Atanasio Giradot, a 1-0 defeat to Deportes Tolima on Sunday - their first home defeat since 31 March, when they lost 4-1 to America de Cali.

They have never been behind at home in this competition and have never lost a Sudamericana match when scoring in the second half.

El Rojo Paisa are unbeaten against Argentine opposition in this year's Sudamericana, beating Defensa y Justicia 2-1 in the group stage to record their first-ever victory over an Argentine club in the competition.

For the second time at the Sudamericana this year, Lanus failed to find the back of the net last Wednesday despite having eight shots on target.

Finding the back of the net has been an ongoing problem for the Argentinians, who have failed to score in three of their last four games in all competitions.

Ricardo Zielinski's men are unbeaten away from home in the Sudamericana this season, having won their last three games as visitors in the competition.

Lanus go into the game without a win in five consecutive competitive matches, having lost 3-0 to Huracan in the Argentine Primera Division on Sunday.

This will be their third appearance in the last eight of the competition and Lanus have progressed beyond this stage on two previous occasions, eliminating Independiente of Argentina at this stage in 2020 and River Plate in the quarter-finals in 2013.

Granate have never lost a Copa Sudamericana match against a Colombian side in five previous encounters, including two victories over La Equidad and two triumphs over Junior.

Joaquin Varela was ruled out of the first leg after suffering a ligament injury earlier this month, leaving Homer Martinez, Daniel Londono, Francisco Chaverra and Baldomero Perlaza as the only newcomers who did not start the 4-0 win over Palestino.

Eder Chaux saved his side's blushes against Lanus last week, making eight stops to keep his third clean sheet of the tournament.

The last time these two sides met, Argentina were without Dylan Aquino, who is recovering from a torn muscle, Abel Luciatti with a hamstring strain and Felipe Pena Biafore with an adductor injury.

Nahuel Losada faced just three shots on target in the first leg and kept them all out to record his first clean sheet of the tournament since replacing Alan Aguerre, who started each of the group matches.

Independiente Medellin possible starting lineup:

Chaux; Chaverra, Martinez, Torijano, Londono, Fory; Perlaza, Alvarado, Mosquera; Garcia, Sandoval

Lanus possible starting lineup:

Losada; Morgantini, Izquierdoz, Luciatti, Soler; Loaiza, Boggio; Acosta, Moreno, Carrera; Bou

Prediction:Independiente Medellin 1-1 Lanus (Independiente Medellin advance on penalties)
