Preview: Oxford United vs Burnley,Championship Gameweek 7

Soccer News 2024/09/28 10:17

Burnley started the season in such a dominant fashion that they were expected to cruise to the title with little fuss.

Instead, they have been made to work hard for every point, having to come from behind to record a 2-1 win over winless Portsmouth last time out.

Although Scott Parker's side had impressively beaten Leeds United by a solitary goal in their previous outing, it was a reminder that things may not always go their way as the campaign progresses.

On the other hand, Burnley have had arguably the toughest start of any team in the division, having also faced the likes of Luton Town, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers.

Parker is optimistic that his side will be able to close the three-point gap to West Bromwich Albion, and hopefully add to their two clean sheets in the process.

Meanwhile, Oxford's main objective this season is simply to survive in the second tier after more than two decades in the EFL's lower echelons.

Nevertheless, Des Buckingham's side are currently looking like outside play-off contenders with nine points from their six games.

Despite three away defeats, including last weekend's 2-1 defeat at Bristol City, Oxford have won every one of their home games by a single goal.

Norwich City, Preston North End and Stoke City have all lost at the Kassam Stadium and Burnley will be hoping to end that run on Saturday.

With Josh McEachran forced off in the first half against Bristol City, Will Vaulks is expected to come into the Oxford XI.

Malcolm Ebiowei is an option on the flank, but Buckingham is unlikely to tinker too much with his side for this fixture.

Despite the win last time out, Parker could make at least two changes to his Burnley starting line-up.

Bashir Humphreys is available after suspension and could start at right-back in place of TJ Egan-Riley.

Jeremy Sarmiento could also start in the final third in place of Jaidon Anthony, but up to seven players remain on the injury list.

Oxford United possible starting lineup:

Cumming; Kioso, Moore, Brown, Leigh; Vaulks; Goodrham, Rodrigues, Mizouni, Dembele; Harris

Burnley possible starting lineup:

Trafford; Humphreys, Worrall, Esteve, Pires; Cullen, Brownhill; Koleosho, Mejbri, Sarmiento; Foster

Prediction:Oxford United 1-2 Burnley
