Chelsea's Cole Palmer had a great game on Saturday, scoring four first-half goals, including a stunning long-range free kick and a penalty, in a 4-2 Premier League victory over Brighton.

There were some mistakes in goal from both teams, with high defensive lines and speedy counter-attacks contributing to an exciting match. Brighton's French forward Georginio Rutter scored the first goal in the seventh minute, but then Chelsea's 22-year-old Palmer scored three goals in 11 minutes.

The Brighton supporters jeered when their former goalkeeper, Roberto Sanchez, came out of his goal in a scramble and missed the ball, giving Rutter a free header.

But Chelsea, now the league's top scorers this season, stepped up the pressure and Palmer hit the post and had a goal disallowed for offside before his scoring spree.

The first goal came after 20 minutes from a Nicolas Jackson interception. The Senegalese striker made a run towards the goal and passed the ball to Palmer, who tapped it in.

Palmer's second goal was from the penalty spot, after Jadon Sancho was brought down in the box.

The former Manchester City player has been nicknamed "Ice Cole" and he showed his cool side again with his 10th successful penalty in 10 attempts since joining Chelsea last season.

Palmer completed his hat-trick at the half-hour mark with a lovely free kick from about 30 metres out that curled perfectly beyond Verbruggen into the top corner. Carlos Baleba pulled one back for Brighton in the 32nd minute after another mistake from Sanchez, who misjudged a clearance.

Palmer was on fire and became the first player to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League match. He should have added a fifth in the second half but put the ball wide with only keeper Bart Verbruggen to beat.

The second half was a bit more controlled, with both teams playing it a bit safer, but there were still chances at both ends. Plus, some of the goalkeeping was better, and Adam Webster made some great last-minute saves to keep Chelsea from running amok.

The result saw Chelsea move up to third in the table and ended Brighton's unbeaten start to the season.
