Preview: Porto vs Arouca,Primeira Liga, Gameweek 7
Soccer News 2024/09/29 08:01
Despite losing their Europa League opener against Bodo/Glimt in midweek, Porto will be looking to get back to winning ways on home soil this weekend if they are to avoid slipping further behind Sporting in the early league standings.
Bruno's men have only lost to the Portuguese giants in 2024-25, a 2-0 defeat in Lisbon that remains the Dragons' only league blemish of the campaign.
And while they could be six points adrift going into Sunday's clash, with Amorim's men favourites to beat Estoril on Friday, Porto will be looking for a sixth league win in seven weeks to get back to winning ways after their 3-2 continental defeat.
However, the home side will be wary of a side who have taken four points from a possible six against them in the 2023-24 campaign, most notably a 1-1 draw in the corresponding fixture in September 2023, before stunning the 30-time champions 3-2 in Aveiro seven months ago.
Prior to last season's result, Porto had won seven consecutive matches against Arouca in all competitions and will be hoping to return to that pattern after the anomalous results of 23-24.
The away side are in indifferent form heading into this weekend's clash, despite taking maximum points from a 1-0 win at Farense in round six.
Alfonso Trezza scored a week ago to end Lobos' three-game losing streak on the road and their five-game unbeaten run on the road, and they will be looking for back-to-back away wins for the first time since 2-1 victories at Estoril and Portimonense in early 2024.
That remains to be seen, given the usual pattern of this fixture and the fact that Arouca have lost four of their six top-flight games this season heading into Sunday's clash.
While success could see the 14th-placed side move into the top half of the standings, a negative result could see Gonzalo Garcia's side slip into the relegation play-offs if newly promoted Nacional beat Famalicao away and 15th-placed Boavista beat in-form Santa Clara.
Samu Omorodion scored on his Europa League debut despite Porto's defeat, and the summer signing from Atletico Madrid will be looking for a fourth successive goal after netting twice against Farense and Vitoria de Guimaraes.
Ivan Marcano and Zaidu Sanusi are long-term absentees for the Dragons due to knee injuries, while Fabio Vieira is out with a muscle problem.
Arouca have had three top scorers this season - David Simao, Henrique Araujo and Trezza - and may have to find their fourth from a different source in the absence of a recognised prolific striker.
The away side's task is made doubly difficult by the injury to Araujo, while Eboue Kouassi, Matias Rocha, Quaresma, Pedro Moreira, Oriol Busquets, Vitinho and Nino Galovic are all expected to miss out on the trip to Porto.
Porto possible starting lineup:
Costa; Mario, Pedro, Perez, Moura; Eustaquio, Varela; Pepe, Gonzalez, Galeno; Omorodion
Arouca possible starting lineup:
Mantl; Esgaio, Lamba, Fontan, Dante; Fukui, Simao; Rodrigues, Trezza, Sylla; Yalcin
Prediction:Porto 3-0 Arouca
