Preview: AVS vs. SC Farense Primeira Liga ,Gameweek 7

Soccer News 2024/09/29 08:50

Despite playing at this level for the first time, AVS have made a commendable start to their inaugural campaign, taking seven points from six games.

Although this has left them in the bottom half of the table heading into the seventh round of matches, their fans will see the glass as half full, having seen off six teams (in terms of points) prior to the start of the current round.

AVS have benefited from results on home soil, picking up all seven of their points in Aves, where they are on a three-match unbeaten run.

After drawing with fellow newcomers Nacional on the opening weekend of the campaign (24-25 January), Campelos have followed that up with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Vitoria Guimaraes and Rio Ave and will be looking to make it three in a row on Monday.

They will have their work cut out for them, given Farense's struggles this term, which have been underlined by challenges at both ends of the pitch over a disheartening six rounds.

Toze Marreco, Jose Mota's replacement, inherits a team that had conceded 13 goals and scored just two before the seventh round of matches, highlighting the lack of quality at both ends of the pitch that has contributed to their losing streak.

After conceding only their second league goal of the campaign in a 2-1 defeat at the home of title challengers Porto, Leoes de Faro fired on all cylinders last weekend, losing 1-0 to Arouca in front of their home fans.

Last year's 10th-placed side's poor start to the season meant they were one of only two clubs without a win going into this week's fixture, although Estrela Amadora beat Moreirense in round seven.

Faro will be hoping Lady Luck smiles on them when they visit Aves on Monday, although a broader analysis of their away form suggests more disappointment for a side who have lost eight of their last 10 league games on the road, picking up four points from a possible 40.

Having last won on the road at the end of April, combined with AVS's stinginess at Aves, the visitors will need to pull out all the stops to avoid a fifth successive away defeat and a fourth this term.

Nene, AVS's match-winner against Guimaraes, and Vasco Lopes, their top scorer against Rio Ave, are out through injury, while Lucas Moura has a shoulder problem.

Rodrigo Ribeiro should return to lead the home attack after missing last week's 3-0 defeat at parent club Sporting Lisbon.

Toze will be without the injured quartet of Kaique Pereira, Marco Matias, Tomane and Jaiminho in his first match in charge of the away side.

Aside from the injured Tomane, only Alex Bermejo Escribano has found the back of the net for Farense this term, and the new boss will be hoping that other players in the squad will step up to the plate for the struggling club.

AVS possible starting lineup:

SC Farense possible starting lineup:
