Dortmund 7-1 Celtic: 'Embarrassment to Scotland!' - Celtic become a laughing stock

Celtic’s unbeaten run in the season was shattered in devastating fashion as Borussia Dortmund handed them a humbling 7-1 defeat in the UEFA Champions League. Daizen Maeda briefly provided hope for the Scottish champions, equalising after Emre Can’s early penalty. However, Celtic's relief was short-lived as Karim Adeyemi netted a hat-trick, and Serhou Guirassy added another spot-kick to give Dortmund a commanding 5-1 lead by half-time.

Courtesy of their dismal first-half performance, Celtic became the first British team to concede five goals in the first half of a game in a European competition since Cwmbran Town the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup match against Progresul Bucharest. Dortmund further added to their misery in the second half with Guirassy and Felix Nmecha rounding off the 7-1 demolition.

Rival fans did not let go of the opportunity to mock Celtic and social media was buzzing with their witty responses.

A Rangers fan, @HappiestPants, wrote: "FOUR? Nah this can’t be, Rangers went to Germany and HAMMERED a far superior Dortmund team, what’s going on?! Celtic are an embarrassment to Scotland!!"

Meanwhile, @RG72_, wrote: "Generational hate watch cheers lads."

Meanwhile, @unsynq, wrote: "5-1 down at half time..And people thought you's would do well in the Prem. The Championship would be the right level for Celtic."

@ryanward5_ opined: "Celtic are a waste of time in the Champions League like. Might as well give it to another Prem team."

Whereas, @ExpressionsOOZ, wrote: "Celtic go from Man City in their league to Southampton in the Champions league it’s crazy."

Celtic's dreadful record in Germany continued, having never won in 14 visits. Only some heroic last-minute defending by Liam Scales and crucial saves from Kasper Schmeichel prevented an even worse scoreline, narrowly avoiding a repeat of their heaviest-ever European defeat.

Celtic have little time to shake off the defeat as they will be back in action on Sunday afternoon in the Scottish Premiership against Ross County. They have won their first six matches of the domestic campaign and will be eager to continue their perfect run after a disappointing defeat to the German side.
