Soccer News 2024/10/09 06:23

Jamal Shabazz got the start he was looking for on the second matchday, with his side leading 2-0 before the half-hour mark, but it was not to be.

It was only the second time the senior side had failed to win a Nations League match when drawing first blood, the previous time being a 1-1 draw against Jamaica in November 2019.

Guyana are in danger of being relegated to League B of the tournament, which will happen if they lose this match and Guadeloupe and Suriname win theirs.

A defeat on Friday would be the first time they have lost back-to-back matches in this competition at the Synthetic Track and Field Facility, having lost 3-1 to Suriname in their last Nations League match there.

Only one of their last six matches in all competitions has ended in victory for Guyana, a 3-1 win over Belize in a World Cup qualifier in June.

That victory ended a five-year winless streak against teams from Central America, with their previous triumph against the region coming against Belize in March 2019 (2-1).

In a defensive stalemate on the second matchday, Guatemala kept their place in the top two of Group B by keeping their first clean sheet of the tournament.

On Friday, they can end a two-game winless run away from home in all competitions, having followed up a 4-1 friendly defeat in Argentina with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay.

The Guatemalans, in League A for the second time, are still looking for their first away win of the tournament, having lost both their away games last year by a combined score of 6-2.

Luis Fernando Tena's men can book their place in the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time with a win, combined with defeats to Suriname and Guadeloupe.

Since a 3-2 defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in this competition last October, La Bicolor have gone unbeaten in their last four meetings with the Caribbean nation, conceding just one goal in the process.

Los Chapines have a 100% record against Guyana, having not conceded in any of their three previous meetings, including a 2-0 triumph at the Providence Stadium in 2012.

There were two changes to Guyana's starting eleven between the first and second matchdays of their Nations League campaign, with Jalen Jones and Stephen Duke-McKenna coming in for Curtez Kellman and Omari Glasgow.

Isaiah Jones scored a brace in the draw with Martinique, his first two goals for the national team, while Glasgow can equal Nigel Codrington's all-time goalscoring record for Guyana if he finds the back of the net on Friday.

On the Guatemalan side, Tena has made three changes to his starting eleven against Costa Rica, with Nicolas Samayoa, Marco Dominguez and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing replacing Jose Morales, Oscar Castellanos and Elmer Cardoza.

Nicholas Hagen, who is five caps shy of 50, needed just two stops to keep a clean sheet on the second day of the tournament.

Guyana possible starting lineup:

Roberts; Vancooten, J. Jones, Greenidge, Daniel; Bonds, Ferguson; I. Jones, De Rosario, Glasgow; Moore

Guatemala possible starting lineup:

Hagen; Herrera, Pinto, Samayoa, Morales; Dominguez, Castellanos; Santis, Galindo, Cardoza; Rubin

Prediction:Guyana 0-2 Guatemala
