Preview: Zambia vs Chad,Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying Group Stage

Soccer News 2024/10/10 03:14

Zambia showed great grit to emerge triumphant from a five-goal thriller against Sierra Leone when the two sides met on 10 September.

After throwing away 1-0 and 2-1 leads, Avram Grant's men were on course for a share of the spoils on home soil, only for Kings Kangwa to grab the winner five minutes from the end of normal time.

The result ended a dismal run of nine competitive matches without a win for the Chipolopolo, who had also gone empty-handed in six successive matches.

While Grant saw his side fail to keep a clean sheet for the 15th consecutive game, he would have been pleased with their attacking prowess after five games without a goal.

Currently second in Group G of the AFCON qualifiers, Zambia could move five points clear of the chasing pack ahead of next week's trip to Yaounde for the second leg of their double-header with Chad.

Chad's downward spiral continued in last month's meeting with the Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire, which ended in a 2-0 defeat at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo.

After setting up Jean-Philippe Krasso's opener on the stroke of half-time, Oumar Diakite struck a 55th-minute consolation to leave Kevin Nicaise's men with an insurmountable task.

It is now three defeats and a stalemate from their last four games for Les Sao, who have been woeful at both ends of the pitch, conceding five goals and scoring none in the process.

Chad, who have yet to take part in an actual AFCON, sit bottom of their qualifying group and are running out of time to salvage their continental dreams ahead of Friday's clash in Ndola, where they will be seeking only their second away win since 2015.

Leicester City striker Patson Daka is still out of contention for Zambia after suffering an ankle injury in the pre-season friendly against Lens in August.

Fashion Sakala remains out in the cold after a disagreement with Avram Grant, but Frankie Musonda is available after recovering from injury.

Chipyoka Songa has been handed his first call-up for the home side, although it remains to be seen whether he will make his international debut in this game.

Chad's Marius has played a part in three goals in his last four appearances for the club and will be keen to continue his international form.

Casimir Ninga, who has made more appearances (32) and scored more goals (five) for his country than any other player, will be looking to add to both records.

Zambia possible starting lineup:

Mulenga; Chepeshi, Chongo, Mwape; Banda, Chisala, Chama, Chaiwa, L Musonda; Kangwa, K Musonda

Chad possible starting lineup:

Allabatna; Osee, Abderamane, Nounchil, Thiam; Damba, Tchouplaou; Allarabaye, Yeo, Marius; Ninga

Prediction:Zambia 2-1 Chad
