Preview: Benin vs Rwanda,Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying Group Stage

Soccer News 2024/10/10 03:39

After going down 3-0 to West African rivals Nigeria in their Group D opener, Benin bounced back with a 2-1 win over Libya in their second match.

The Cheetahs fell behind in the ninth minute when Faisal Al Badri converted a penalty for Libya, but a 12-minute second-half spell in which Steve Mounie scored and Junior Olaitan converted a penalty saw Benin come from behind to claim victory.

The result lifted Gernot Rohr's side to second place in Group D with three points, and they will now look to make the most of their double-header against Rwanda in the coming days to move closer to an AFCON ticket.

Les Guepards have not featured at the Africa Cup of Nations since reaching the quarter-finals in Egypt in 2019, and they will go into Friday's game looking to maintain their five-match unbeaten run, which could take them closer to ending that drought.

The Cheetahs recorded a 1-0 home win over Friday's visitors in a World Cup qualifier in June, a result they will be hoping to replicate this time around.

Rwanda have made only one appearance at the AFCON in their history, at Tunisia 2004, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage after a win, a draw and a defeat.

The Wasps began their bid to qualify for the 2025 edition with a 1-1 draw against Libya in Tripoli, before holding Nigeria to a goalless draw a few days later.

Now unbeaten in their last three matches, the Wasps will be looking to continue their good form under Torsten Spittler, who has taken charge of the team since November, with just one defeat, four draws and three wins from eight games.

With two draws, Rwanda remain unbeaten in this AFCON qualifying campaign, but a first win is crucial and they will be hoping to repeat their 1-0 away win over Benin in a 2011 AFCON qualifier.

Mounie, who has scored 18 goals since making his debut for Benin in October 2015, will spearhead Les Guepards' attack, while Dodo Dokou, Jodel Dossou and Olaitan will provide support behind the striker.

Olivier Verdon, Cedric Hountondji, Yohan Roche and Rachid Moumini will once again form the back four.

Rwanda will be without midfielder Rafael York and striker Hakim Sahabo, both of whom have been suspended for disciplinary reasons.

Innocent Nshuti has scored Wasps' only goal so far in this AFCON qualifying campaign and is expected to lead the line again.

Benin possible starting lineup:

Dandjinou; Roche, Verdon, Hountondji, Moumini; D'Almeida, Imourane; Olaitan, Dokou, Dossou, Mounie

Rwanda possible starting lineup:

Ntwari; Omborenga, Mutsinzi, Manzi, Niyomugabo; Rebangouka, Bizimana; G. Mugisha, Muhire, Kwizera; Nshuti

Prediction:Benin 2-1 Rwanda
