Hungary and the Netherlands are tied 1-1 after their UEFA Nations League match at the Puskas Stadium in Budapest, Hungary, on October 11, 2024.

Ronald Koeman's Netherlands had to wait until the last minute for Denzel Dumfries' goal to salvage a point against Hungary in the UEFA Nations League. Roland Sallai gave Hungary the lead in the first half at the Puskas Stadium and things were looking good for the home side when Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was sent off. However, Denzel Dumfries scored in the 83rd minute to equalize.

The first 20 minutes were evenly matched, with Hungary almost breaking the deadlock when Roland Sallai collected Dominik Szoboszlai's corner, but the hosts soon took the lead.

Hungary launched a dangerous attack just after the half-hour mark. Zolt Nagy delivered a brilliant cross from the left, and the unmarked Sallai made no mistake as he carefully volleyed the ball past the back post and past Bart Verbruggen.

The visitors had a chance to equalise after a clash between the Hungarian goalkeeper and Szoboszlai, giving the visitors an indirect free kick in the box, but Denes Dibbs made up for a lapse in concentration by saving Cody Gakpo's shot and collecting the ball in a busy six-yard box.

The Netherlands struggled to equalise in the second half. Stefan de Vrij and Tijani Reinders came close with shots but Hungary held on, looking to earn their first win against their Dutch opponents.

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk was sent off after two straight yellow cards, leaving the visitors with 10 men on the pitch. But they equalised minutes later, with Dumfries heading home from a cross from Gakpo.

This was the first time Van Dijk had been sent off in his Dutch international career, and he will miss a big game against Germany as a result.

It was a somewhat unfair red card. The first came in the 77th minute for venting his frustration at the referee after a foul on Malen, and the second came two minutes later for bringing down Kevin Jobos as he was dribbling down the wing.

It's a big loss for the Netherlands, as the captain and key player in the backline will miss the next game against Germany. But for Liverpool, the team captain can get plenty of time to rest before facing Chelsea and Arsenal in the next few rounds of the Premier League.
