The Ukrainian national football team got their first win in the UEFA Nations League, beating Georgia 1-0. Even though they won, Ukraine is still in last place in the group standings, behind Albania because of the head-to-head results.
Ukraine got their first points in the UEFA Nations League, ending Georgia's perfect start to Group B1 with a 1-0 win in Poznan, Poland.
The Blue and Yellow had scored three times in the group despite their two defeats before tonight. When Heorhiy Sudakov made space inside the box for his shot that just missed the target, they certainly looked confident in front of goal again.
After that, there was a floodlight failure behind one of the goals at Stadion Poznan, which meant the match had to be stopped. The officials decided it was safe to continue after a few minutes, though. The break didn't affect Ukraine's performance. They dominated the game but couldn't get a shot on target against goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
That was until the 35th minute, when Serhiy Rebrov's side took the lead with the first shot on target of the match. Giorgi Kochorashvili got caught out of position in his own half, allowing Sudakov to send Mykhailo Mudryk on a mazy dribble to the edge of the box, where he unleashed a low drive to beat Mamardashvili.
Georgia showed more attacking intent after conceding their first goal in 10 games, but the best chance of the half fell to Mykola Shaparenko, whose free header from a pinpoint Sudakov cross missed the target.
Georgia had only suffered two defeats at UEFA Euro 2024 before tonight, and Georges Mikautadze was keen to make sure that record stayed intact. He managed to shake off the Ukraine defence, but his strike only found the side netting.
Just two minutes later, the team was lucky to still be one down. Mamardashvili made a great save from Mudryk, who was about to score from a long range.
Like their opponents in the first half, the Crusaders had the majority of the ball in the second half, but despite pressing well, they rarely troubled Anatoliy Trubin in the Ukraine goal.
They thought they'd got the goal they were hoping for in the 89th minute when Zuriko Davitashvili's deflected effort found the net, but it was ruled that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was in an offside position in the build-up.
The Czech Republic's win over Albania means Georgia is now only leading the group standings on GD. They're still hoping to become the first team to go from League D to League A in the UNL. Ukraine are now hoping to avoid back-to-back relegations in the competition after a third win in their last nine.
