Match preview

After overseeing a respectable debut campaign in the Premier League, one would have thought that Rob Edwards would have plenty of credit in the bank at Luton.

Instead, the head coach is under pressure to get things back on track after his side collected just eight points from their opening nine games.

Back-to-back victories over Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday in September seemed to have kick-started their season, only for them to pick up just one point from their next three outings.

A loss at Sheffield United was perhaps to be expected, but a 3-1 defeat at Plymouth Argyle and a two-goal lead against Oxford United were not.

Sitting just three points adrift of 14th place, Edwards knows that a win against his former club on Saturday could work wonders, but he will be aware of the backlash he will face if Luton suffer a sixth Championship defeat in 10 outings.

Daniel Bachmann in training.

Tom Cleverley is enjoying a far more positive season with Watford, who have impressively taken 16 points from their opening nine games to emerge as surprise promotion contenders.

Things are far from perfect, with the Hornets having lost their last three away games, but Cleverley would have been on that tally had it been handed to him at the start of the season.

In stark contrast to their efforts away from home, Watford have been in excellent form at Vicarage Road, winning four and drawing one of their five games.

Sitting just three points off the pace at the top, they have the chance to become involved in the title race if they can continue to win regularly.
