Villarreal vs Getafe
Match preview
Villarreal underperformed in La Liga last season, finishing eighth, but the Yellow Submarine have made a strong start to the 2024-25 campaign, taking 17 points from nine games to sit fourth in the table.
Marcelino's side have been the entertainers of the Spanish top flight this term, scoring 17 times, the third-best attacking record behind Barcelona (28) and Real Madrid (19), but they have also conceded 17 goals, the second-worst defensive record, making them a team to watch in 2024-25.
Villarreal's two defeats this season have come at the hands of Barcelona and Real Madrid, and while those games highlighted the difference in class, the Yellow Submarine will be hoping to challenge the likes of Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao to be the best of the rest this term.
Marcelino's side will not be playing in Europe this season, but their Copa del Rey journey for the 2024-25 campaign begins later this month away to Poblense.
Villarreal have won two of their last three league games, but were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu before the international break, with Los Blancos scoring in each half.
Getafe, meanwhile, have taken four points from their last two games, beating Alaves at home at the end of September and drawing 1-1 with Osasuna before the international break.
The capital side's record of one win, five draws and three defeats from nine league games this term leaves them with eight points, which puts them in 16th place, two points above the relegation zone.
While Villarreal have scored and conceded a lot this season, the opposite has been true of Getafe, who have scored just six goals - the second-worst attacking record in the league - but conceded just seven, the third-best defensive record in the league behind Atletico (five) and Real Madrid (six).
Getafe have proved difficult to beat this season, despite only managing one win, and their narrow 1-0 defeat to Barcelona at the end of September will have given them confidence.
The Deep Blue Ones have not beaten Villarreal in La Liga since January 2019, but the two meetings between the two sides in the 2023-24 campaign ended in a draw.
