Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a goal and provided two assists in a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday. It was Ruud van Nistelrooy's final game as interim manager and his most spectacular farewell.

Fernandes, who had not scored in 17 games under ten Hag, celebrated his 250th appearance for United by scoring in the 17th minute. He received a back-heel pass from Amad Diallo and fired a low shot into the far corner. It was Van Nistelrooy's fourth goal in four games as captain.

"It was a long time that I wasn't scoring and now goals are coming in the last few games," Fernandes said. "Another clean sheet was important for us to bring back the fortress we had here. We have to keep doing that and we have to improve."

Leicester defender Victor Christiansen scored for United in the 38th minute. Fernandes missed Nusser Mazraoui's cross but the ball bounced off his thigh and flew into the goal from Christiansen's feet.

Alejandro Ganacho scored the third goal for United in the 82nd minute. Fernandes found him on the left and the Argentine striker curled a shot into the top corner.

Fans at Old Trafford were thinking about Van Nistelrooy until the end of the game.

Ten Hag's permanent replacement, Ruben Amorim, is due to arrive from Sporting Lisbon on Monday. His first game as United manager is scheduled for November 24 at Ipswich Town. It is not yet clear whether Van Nistelrooy will remain at United. However, the team's former striker said he hopes to continue with the team as a coach.

"I absolutely believe this club has all the ingredients to get back to the levels I knew as a player," Van Nistelrooy wrote in Sunday's game programme. "From tomorrow, I will be getting behind our new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and I urge everyone who loves the club to do the same."

Fernandes had kind words for the interim manager.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy fills the club, he loves the club, he wants to bring joy to the players," he said. "He brought everyone with a smile to the games, he just wanted us to enjoy it. We wanted to say goodbye as a manager for him properly because he did good things for us.

"It's a new era, a new manager means everything changes but what hasn't changed is that this club has to get back to where it belongs."

The weather didn’t help, but Sunday’s game took a turn for the worse in the second half. Jordan Ayew created a great chance for the visitors when he blasted the ball hard at the near post, but the ball was blocked out of the bottom line.

Manchester United have lost just two of their last 18 Premier League games against the Foxes. Since head coach Erik ten Hag was sacked on October 28 and replaced on an interim basis by Ruud van Nistelrooy, United have won three and drawn one in all competitions, including two wins over Leicester City.

They are currently 13th in the league table with 15 points, four points behind the top three. Leicester City is currently 15th with 10 points. After the international break, Manchester United will travel to Ipswich Town, while Leicester City will face another strong opponent, Chelsea, at the King Power Stadium.
