Thibaut Courtois may return to Belgium after a dispute with the coach

The stand-off between Belgium head coach Domenico Tedesco and Thibaut Courtois has been resolved, but Tedesco said on Wednesday that the Real Madrid goalkeeper's return is time-limited.

Courtois hasn't played for Belgium since last June, when he had a falling-out with the coach over not being named captain in a European Championship qualifier in Estonia.

Although Courtois missed most of last season with a serious knee injury, he returned to help Real Madrid win the Champions League before sitting out the 2024 European Championship in Germany.

In August, Courtois, 32, who has played 102 times for Belgium, said that he wouldn't play for his country as long as Tedesco was coach. "Unfortunately, after an incident with the coach and after much reflection, I've decided not to return to the Belgian national team under his management," Courtois said in a social media statement in August.

Courtois, 32, hasn't played for Belgium since June 2023. But Peter Williams, the new CEO of the Belgian Football Association, has gone to Madrid to try to persuade him to change his mind. Tedesco revealed at a press conference ahead of Belgium's Nations League match against Italy in Brussels that he'd been aware of the negotiations for a few weeks.

"He (Williams) asked me what I thought about it. As CEO, he has every right to do so. I've always been open to it and I am still doing so now. I think everything has been discussed on this issue."

On Tuesday, Williams told local reporters that Tedesco is "definitely the right person" and he is eager to resolve the Courtois issue.
