Yankees could replace Luke Weaver with $70 million Brewers star

The Milwaukee Brewers won the National League Central in 2024 but failed to succeed in the postseason. They could unload one of their key players before he hits free agency.

While listing teams that could trade for Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams, FanSided's Eric Treuden noted that the New York Yankees could swing a blockbuster trade for him.

"The other club that made it all the way to the World Series this year is another one without a proven closer at the back-end of their 'pen," wrote Treuden. "Journeyman Luke Weaver became the Yankees' closer in the postseason and could conceivably take that role back come 2025, but he may be better suited as a multi-inning role-player that can bounce around between assignments in the bullpen."

Luke Weaver was key for the Yankees in the postseason. He finished eight games and had four saves. However, regardless of how great he is, he does not compare to Williams. Williams is a two-time All-Star and two-time National League Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year.

Spotrac projects Williams to sign a five-year, $70 million deal in free agency after next season. However, the Brewers have a track record of trading away star players before they eventually walk in free agency. They did so with Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader in the last few years.

"Like the Dodgers, the Yankees easily have the pieces needed to land someone like Williams," wrote Treuden. "If they have interest, the Brewers would have very little difficulty looking through their farm system and finding pieces that catch their eye."

Williams has struggled in the postseason for the Brewers, but it should not take away from the type of player the Yankees would be getting. However, his contract ending after one season could impact what type of return the Brewers get.
