Bayer Leverkusen, the defending champions, have made it through to the quarter-finals of the German Cup. Nathan Tyra scored in the second half, beating ten-man home team Bayern Munich 1-0.
It was the first loss for Bundesliga leaders Bayern in the league or domestic cup this season. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off with a direct red card in the 17th minute, which was the first time the 38-year-old has been sent off in his long career.
Both teams were missing their main strikers, with Leverkusen missing Victor Boniface and Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane for several weeks after he was injured in Bayern's draw with Dortmund last week.
The game started with both teams evenly matched, with both sides fighting for the initiative until Bayern's Neuer body-butted Jérémy Frimpong outside the penalty area. This resulted in a direct red card for the Bayern player.
The home team had to switch up their formation, bringing in substitute goalkeeper Daniel Peretz for Leroy Sané, but they still had the better chances in the first half, with goals from Kingsley Coman, Konrad Laimer and Leon Goretzka.
Leverkusen turned the game around in the 69th minute when Tera, who had come on eight minutes earlier, headed in a great cross from Grimaldo.
Bayern had trouble creating chances until Michael Olisey's shot in stoppage time put the Leverkusen goal in real danger. Leverkusen held on to their narrow lead until the end, keeping up their defence of the DFB Pokal title.
Xabi Alonso has never lost in the DFB Pokal, despite winning eight games in a row during his time as coach. Bayern Munich, who have won the title 20 times, haven't lifted the trophy since 2020.
