Red Sox urged to forget about Garrett Crochet & target $71 million Marlins star

The Miami Marlins had a rather disappointing season in 2024. They traded away star players like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Tanner Scott. They have another star who could be a target of the Boston Red Sox.

While listing players the Red Sox should target instead of Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox, FanSided's Miles Houston urged the team to swing a trade for Jesús Luzardo.

"Luzardo would be a solid alternative to Crochet, as he is still just 27 and has a few years of control left. Furthermore, with rumors that he has been put up on the Marlins’ trade block, he would be an excellent get by Breslow," wrote Houston.

Luzardo has dealt with injuries but is still a productive starter. The Marlins likely will not pay him when he becomes a free agent so they should try and get something for him while they can. Spotrac projects him to sign a five-year, $71 million deal when he hits the market in 2027. He had a strong 2023 campaign and could get a decent return in a trade.

"Once a top-pitching prospect, Jesús Luzardo had an injury-riddled 2024. He posted a 5.00 ERA and a 91 ERA+ in 66 innings. However, despite these poor stats, his 4.26 FIP suggests that much of his struggles were down to the historically poor play of the 2024 Marlins," wrote Houston. "Additionally, when healthy, Luzardo has been a top pitcher. In 2023, Luzardo sported a 3.58 ERA, an FIP of 3.55, and an ERA+ of 131 in 178.2 innings."
