Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie scored as Juventus defeated Manchester City 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, dealing a serious blow to the English champions' hopes of finishing in the last eight of Europe's elite club competition.

City, who will lift the trophy in 2023, continued a poor run of form that has seen them win just one of their last 10 games in all competitions.

Vlahovic broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Kenan Yildiz flicked on the ball and the Serbian's close-range header crept past City goalkeeper Ederson and, according to goal-line technology, just over the line.

Weston McKennie scored the second goal as Juventus beat Man City in Turin.

City upped the tempo in a desperate bid for an equaliser and sent a number of players forward, but Juve took advantage and doubled their lead against the run of play when McKennie volleyed home Timothy Weah's cross in the 75th minute.

Pep Guardiola's side wasted a number of chances, the best of which came when Erling Haaland fired just wide late in the first half. Kevin De Bruyne sent a lovely through ball to the Norwegian, who got behind the defence before attempting a chip which goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio threw up his arms to block.

Gündogan then unleashed a fierce drive from long range that Di Gregorio could only parry away.

"We have done it really, really well, we didn't lose many balls that happened in the past, and we arrived in the positions," Guardiola said.

"But the Italian teams that defend so deep and so compact it is not easy, they are masters of these kinds of situations."

With two games remaining in the Champions League group phase, Juventus are 14th in the standings, while City have slipped to 22nd, three places outside the automatic qualifying places.

Since the start of November, City have conceded more goals (21) in all competitions than any other team in Europe's five major leagues, the worst run of form in Guardiola's otherwise illustrious managerial career.

City, who host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, continue their Champions League campaign at Paris Saint-Germain on 22 January.

Juventus travel to Club Brugge on 21 January.
