Bernhard Weis, who previously coached the Breisgauer U19 team, will take over the position of head coach of the U23 team at SC Freiburg in the new year. The rotation continues in the age groups below.

It was expected that the successor to Benedetto Muzzicato, who left voluntarily, would come from within his own ranks. On Thursday, after just two days of a “coaching vacancy”, such a solution was presented by SC Freiburg. The previous U-19 coach Bernhard Weis will take over the U23 at the turn of the year.

"Bernhard knows the club and our players very well," says Andreas Steiert, head of the Freiburg football school: "After his successful work in the junior sector, we quickly agreed that we wanted to pursue the path to the second team with Bernhard Weis. We are pleased "We look forward to further cooperation in the transition area at the interface between young talent and professionals, which is so important to us."

With the club since 2012

"It is of course a special constellation that a large number of the boys that I looked after as U-19 coach last season are now playing in the U23. After more than twelve years at the sports club, the people are important to me "I'm also familiar with the day-to-day processes in the club, so I'm really looking forward to the new tasks," Weis himself is quoted as saying.

The now 48-year-old has been working at the sports club since the beginning of 2012, initially as an assistant coach for the U17 and U19 teams for five seasons. He then became primarily responsible for the U15 team. And the Freiburg native subsequently moved up the ranks two seasons as head coach of the U17 and responsible for the U-19 team since the 2023/24 season.

Banovic returns

With Weis' move, the previous U-17 coach Julian WiedenSOLER (38) is rotating to the position of U-19 coach. The U17, on the other hand, will now be coached by Ivica Banovic. The former SC professional, who until recently worked as the U-19 coach of GNK Dinamo Zagreb, is returning to Breisgau.
