Rooney returned to Old Trafford on Saturday as he was part of the United Legends side that took on Celtic Legends in a charity clash. The former England and Red Devils skipper handed his side the lead with a world-class free-kick in the first half, however, Gary Cooper restored parity for the visitors.
Despite finding the back of the net with a brilliant set piece, the Plymouth Argyle boss poked fun at his fitness levels as he admitted that making constant runs on the pitch was a major challenge for him. The 38-year-old decided to hang up his boots more than three years ago with his last professional game coming for Derby County in January 2021.
Speaking to MUTV after the match, the ex-United forward said, "Yeah, I’m alright with the ball at my feet. It’s just the running part!’ I was tempted to shoot more but wanted to keep the ball as well.
"It’s a bit scary to be honest. It’s my first game for a long time. It’s always great to see the team-mates you played with and some players who I didn’t play with as well."
The former England international will go back to his managerial duty at Plymouth who will next take on Sunderland on September 14 in the Championship.
